We set off on foot to discover the small Nabatean town of Little Petra (also known as Siq Al Barid). It is a narrow passage through the sand, lined with several tombs and monuments that served as caravanserais. Pass by the ruins of AI Beidha, a Neolithic village dating back more than 9,000 years. Then, along little-travelled paths, we reach the lower town of Petra. Following a series of 800 steps cut into the rock, we reach the Deir (Monastery), a monumental edifice cut into the rock and one of the best-preserved buildings in Petra. The Deir is thought to have served as a temple or royal tomb. Its colossal size suggests that it played a major role in the religious life of the Nabateans. Beautiful views of the desert mountains of Wadi Araba. Descent by the same route to the lower town. Short climb to the Habis massif with the remains of a crusader fortress at the summit. The view of the lower town is magnificent... We continue our discovery of Petra on foot towards the royal tombs carved into the rock.
